Powers:

[/i] Demi has the ability to manipulate the earth around her. She can lift a section and use it as a shield, remove dirt from an object, create very small, local earthquakes (approximately one half mile in diameter), harden soft earth (or vise versa), and use chunks of dirt or rock as projectiles. This only works on dirt and gravel, and other dirt or rock-based materials such as brick or concrete. She can also lift an unlimited amount of microscopic dirt, making a "sand storm" of sorts.

Earth awareness: Demi can sense the earth around her, almost as if she can hear the earth speaking to her. It can tell her things about her surroundings. She swears that the earth sings to her, like a whisper that can't be heard. She can predict "natural" earthquakes and she almost always knows when someone approaches her (provided they're in contact with the ground). This ability also allows her to manipulate earth that she can't see, because she can feel where it is. She can also identify trace mineral deposits and such within the soil. [/ul]

Weaknesses:

[/i] Demi cannot control metal, wood, or other materials even though they are from the earth. Controlling earth telekinetically will tire her if she uses it over long periods of time, or if she tries to do too much at a time. The larger the piece of earth she's trying to move is, the more of her concentration it takes. So, if she tries to lift a chunk the size of a car or larger, she'd have to stop anything else she might be doing at the time. Inversely, if she's merely lifting pebbles the size of marbles, she can lift thousands at a time.

Earth awareness: This power has a distance limit of two miles, maximum. She only hears in her mind what the earth is telling her, which can sometimes be confusing. Demi also cannot tell specifics, only the general "mood" of the earth around her. For example, if two to ten people approached her, she'd only know that it was a small group, not the exact number. Also, heights have some influence on this ability. She can still hear the earth when she's not on the ground, but the higher she gets, the more faint it gets. [/ul]

Anything else: Demi cannot control any form of earth that she can't feel first. (e.g. She can't lift a pebble on the other side of the world just because she knows it's there. It would have to be within her two mile range of sensitivity.)

History: Demi was born on the outskirts of Prague to Stasja and Georgi Varinski. Already having two-year-old son, they were thrilled to have a daughter. Demi was doted upon by the whole family, but the strict rules of the household kept her from becoming spoiled. During early childhood, she was taught and cared for by many members of the extended family as well as immediate family because they all lived in the same village. She and her parents along with her brother, Aleksander, lived in the same house with her grandparents and her uncle's family which included a wife and three children of their own. She learned at a young age that family had little to do with blood, and more to do with love and friendship. Demi had a way of bonding with everyone in some way. Grandda Dimitri called her his Луч солнца (read "duch sodntsa" which translates to "sun beam").

Demi's brother, along with her male cousins, were all very protective over her, but that didn't stop her from trying to look after herself. Demi was never content to work in the kitchen with her mother or play dolls with her female cousins, nor was she expected to. There was a belief in her family that a person was who they were, and that they should be true to that. Demi enjoyed running around outside with the boys, but that impulse faded as she started to get older. Spending more time inside, she also learned how to cook and clean like a normal woman of the family. She loved her life, and never imagined that one day she'd have to leave it all behind.

When Demi was fourteen, her life changed. She, her mother, and her brother made a trip into central Prague for the day as part of their homeschooling. Growing up, she hadn't traveled much, and she was excited to go and see the sights. For the most part, it was a wonderful day. It wasn't until the return trip that things went horribly wrong. The ice was slick, and Stasja lost control of the car, causing an accident. The details are a bit fuzzy for Demi, but she later learned that her mother had lost her leg from the knee down and Demi was left with a horrible scar while Aleksander walked away with a broken arm. It took her a very long time to get over the emotional trauma of the incident, but it allowed her to see things from a different perspective. She learned to care for her mother as she recuperated, along with caring for the rest of the family more than she normally would so that Stasja could rest.

Just as things were getting back to normal a few years later, Demi started noticing changes within herself. At first it scared her, until she remembered Grandda Dimitri's favorite story about Mother Earth and what she'd given the Varinski family. Demi thought the stories were made up at the time, but the things she was experiencing were making her start to believe. All Varinskis knew the story about how they were descendants of Mother Earth herself. Now, something had awoken within her that she couldn't ignore. The rest, as they say, is history.

Personality: Demi is very shy at first glance, but after you get to know her, she can be a bit of a spitfire. Her shyness comes out when she's in an unfamiliar situation, and the spitfire comes out when she's more sure of herself, or if she feels as though she's been wronged in some way. She enjoys meeting new people, but doesn't know how to express it without sounding like a fool, so she usually stays quiet until she can be sure of her surroundings. This can make it seem like she's hesitant, but she's merely thinking before she makes big decisions or takes risks.

She is a bit of a free spirit and likes to go her own way, but you'd never guess it to look at her. Demi enjoys life and tries to look on the bright side of things. When she's excited about something, she gets very animated and lights up like a Christmas tree (figuratively). At times, she can act a bit immature but it's only because she's trying to have fun. She's a child at heart and she prefers it that way. She chooses to see the good in people rather than writing someone off as hopeless. Demi can always be counted on to keep someone's secrets and be there for her friends.

If the situation calls for it, she can really get down to business. If someone she cares about is in trouble, if she's angry, or if she's overly frustrated with something (which happens pretty often) she can focus on her powers better and she's all seriousness. Demi doesn't give up easily, though, and will fight for what she believes in. She likes being around people and enjoys boisterous activities because it reminds her of home and the family she left behind.
